Personal Biography

I am a clinical academic forensic psychiatrist.  I completed undergraduate medical training at Cambridge and UCL, before pursuing psychiatry specialist training in Sussex and South London, during which time I had several other roles including National Medical Director’s Clinical Fellow at the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (2012-2013), Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ (RCPsych) Trainees’ Committee (2013-2014), Darzi Fellow in Medical Education (2014-2015) and President of the European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (2017-2018). In 2021 I completed my DPhil in the Department of Psychiatry focused on understanding which outcomes are important for patients and clinicians in forensic mental health services. This work was supported by a National Institute for Health and Care Research Doctoral Research Fellowship. I also completed a Scholarship at the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence alongside my DPhil.

Research and Teaching

During my DPhil I developed a new outcome measure for forensic mental health services called the FORensic oUtcome Measure (FORUM), which has complementary patient and clinician completed questionnaires. I am leading a programme of work to understand how this can be best used in clinical practice to support patient care.

I am a Consultant Psychiatrist with Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, and a researcher with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre. I also support the OxRisk research programme to develop scalable clinical prediction models, focused on vulnerable groups.

I direct the Oxford Postgraduate Psychiatry Course, hosted by the Department of Psychiatry, which prepares doctors training in psychiatry for clinical practice and the RCPsych’s membership examinations. I am also Deputy Editor of the RCPsych e-Learning Hub, which provides a host of online resources for psychiatrists, including podcasts and interactive modules.
