Ancient World Network Residential

Please see details of the Ancient World Network's expansion and next residential for 2019/20 on the 'Ancient World Network' page. The next residential, for up to 60 students from the North West, will form part of the newly expanded programme developed in partnership with Worcester College and Oxford's Faculty of Classics. For a flavour of what this part of the programme entails, please see the below summary of the 2018 programme's residential.

Ancient World Residential: 2018 programme

Year 12 students from several of our link state schools and FE colleges in Greater Manchester enjoyed a residential at the College, a culmination of the Ancient World Network seminar series which took place at Loreto College, Manchester. Students arrived for a buffet lunch and then in small groups had three tutorial sessions with our Classics and Ancient History tutors, Prof Constanze Guthenke, Prof Jas Elsner, Prof Neil Mclynn, Dr Kalina Allendorf and Dr Sam Gartland. Students discussed a range of Classical and Ancient History areas of research and thinking, with Dr Sam Gartland's group taking a look at Corpus Christi's coin collection, which has coins dating from 500BC to 1600AD. Our events for the 2018/19 academic year will be released in due course on the Ancient World Network webpage.

What Students Said

The most valuable element of the day was ...

'... the small groups for the sessions as there was opportunity to talk to the tutors more about the content and the degree as a whole'

'...speaking with Constanze about the evolution of interpretation of the Iliad'

'...meeting with scholars in a tutorial type discussion - felt able to ask questions'

'...sparking an interest in previously unconsidered areas'
