The brain's ability to protect itself from damage has been revealed

Professor Alastair Buchan, Professorial Fellow in Medicine, is the Head of the Medical Science Division and Dean of the Medical School at the University of Oxford. He has led recent work which explains for the first time the brain's ability to protect itself from the damage that occurs in stroke. The University research group have identified the first example of the brain having a built-in form of neuroprotection. They have shown that "the brain has mechanisms that it can use to protect itself and keep the brain cells alive", said Professor Buchan. It is hoped that this research could help in treating stroke and preventing other neurodegenerative diseases in the future.
