College President Appears on BBC South Today

The College President, Prof Richard Carwardine, appeared on BBC South Today on Feb 9th as part of an item on the appearance of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in a student production of Christopher Marlowe's Dr Faustus in 1966. Prof Carwardine appeared in the play, a production by the Oxford University Dramatic Society, in the roles of 'Cornelius' and 'the Pope' alongside Burton's 'Faustus' and Taylor's non-speaking part 'Helen of Troy'.

Richard Burton had agreed to appear in the play as a favour to his theatrical mentor Prof Nevill Coghill, and following its staging in Oxford flew many of the cast - including Prof Carwardine - to Italy to be part of a Burton-directed film version of the play, in which he was 'relieved' not to be one of the students whose voices were dubbed out of the final version!

We are working on acquiring a video of the piece, which has sadly already disappeared from the BBC iPlayer.
