Dr Geoff Higgins

I obtained my medical degree from Edinburgh University in 2000 and subsequently undertook specialist training in Clinical Oncology at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre. In 2007, I moved to the CRUK/MRC Oxford Institute for Radiation Oncology as a Cancer Research UK Clinical Research Fellow. Since 2011 I have worked as a Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of lung cancer.

My group undertakes research aimed at increasing the efficacy of radiotherapy treatment. In the laboratory we undertake large scale genetic and drug screens that seek to identify new ways of making cancers more sensitive to radiotherapy, without exacerbating the side-effects associated with treatment. My clinical practice is based on undertaking early-phase, proof of concept trials translating our laboratory findings into the clinic.

I am currently supervising four D.Phil students and two Clinical Research Fellows. I lecture to both Radiobiology MSc students as well as final year medical students. My laboratory trains an FHS medical student each year. I am the academic lead for the ACF programme in Clinical Oncology.
